Changes to Car Sharing Costs
Because of rising fuel prices, and in the interests of fairness, a new system for car sharing costs came into effect on September 1st, as follows:-

11 cents per km that each passenger travels, rounded up/down to the nearest 10km and then the nearest dollar.

Example: The distance from the helicopter to the Steamers Beach carpark is 39.27km, giving a round trip of 78.54km. This is rounded up to 80km. At 11c per kilometre, the cost per passenger is $8.80, which rounds up to $9.

Distances from the helicopter and costs will be displayed in the walk descriptions in the Ettremist. The cost can be reduced by mutual agreement for longer trips ie. outside the Shoalhaven

The system has the following benefits:-

  • all passengers pay the same amount regardless of the number of people in the car
  • the more passengers a driver takes, the more money the driver gets
  • car sharing is encouraged
  • the environment benefits because less cars are used
  • parking at the start of the walk should be less congested
  • the arithmetic is simpler
  • future changes will be easier

If you go down to the woods today ...
WARNING re Currambene SF!
On 7th March 2008, Ian MacDonald MLC, Labor Minister for Primary Industries, declared Currambene State Forest as one of the public lands designated for hunting for the purposes of the Game and Feral Animal Control Act for the next five years.

Currambene State Forest is located on both sides of Forest Road between Callala and the Princes Highway south of Nowra.

Licensed hunters may now shoot deer, California quail, pheasant, partridge, peafowl, turkey, pigs, dogs (but not dingos), cats, goats, rabbits, hares and foxes in this state forest. Will hunters be able to tell a lyrebird from a California quail, pheasant, partridge or peafowl?

The State Forests website states that signage will be placed at all entry points to forests declared for hunting. Unfortunately, Shoalhaven bushwalkers often enter forests through non-standard entry points. Recreational users are still permitted to visit these areas while the hunting is taking place. Great!

Lee Rhiannon of the NSW Greens blasts the legislation, saying that it is in the interest of hunters to increase the numbers and types of potential game animals in hunting areas, rather than eradicate them. She says there have been many incidents in the past of hunters releasing pigs and deer into forests to boost the numbers of game to hunt. In addition, hunters can use dogs as part of the hunt, and these of course are always able to discriminate between feral and native animals, aren't they?

Will this legislation be safe and effective?
